FT-IR stands for Fourier Transform InfraRed, a technique used in material analysis. In infrared spectroscopy, IR radiation is passed through a molecular structure where some of it gets absorbed and some of it passes (transmits) through, which then creates a spectrum representing the absorption and transmission. Since no two molecular structures produce the same infrared spectrum, FTIR maps a unique molecular fingerprint of the sample. This is extremely useful in determining the identity of unknown materials, quality, quantity or consistency of a structure. FTIR is considered as quite an advancement over dispersive types of analysis where those instruments separate the individual frequencies of energy emitted from the infrared source through the use of a prism. The prism separates visible light into its colors (frequencies), or grating, a dispersive element which separates the frequencies of infrared energy, resulting in a spectrum which is a plot of intensity vs. frequency.
